Aiming Higher : Stories From The Farm

Aiming Higher

So, we learned several things on Friday.  Some fun, some disappointing.

We took Serra to the vet to see if anything might have possibly changed with her, and it had not.  She still has tiny ovaries, and the vet told us to think of her as a pretty gelding.  So, I am going to start training her under saddle, try and get her trail broke.  If we can not find a VERY GOOD home for her, I may just keep her and turn her into a grand-kids horse.  We have already begun to readjust the budget for such.

On a lighter side, we have been schooling both Kahli and Iris, one of Elaine's Anglo-Arab mares over jumps.  Still just free-jumping, because I am not good enough at jumping yet myself, and I would prefer NOT to mess up the babies.  Both have really wonderful form over the jumps, and both set new personal bests for themselves yesterday.  Kahli jumped 2'3", an increase of 3 inches, and Iris jumped 2'4", an increase of 4 inches for herself. Not bad for their second day doing combination jumps either.

Kahli had seen single rail jumps, but it has been over a year since she last went over one, and Iris had never seen a single pole.  I do not know the different names of all the jumps, so I had two poles about 2-3 feet apart and about 2 feet tall with a takeoff and landing pole since those really seem to help the babies.  Once their form was developed, I added a second single pole about a stride after (they were already used to ground poles being there) asking them to lift themselves again.  I started them with little cross-rails, and moved them up to their current bests yesterday. Once they start to master this combination, I may make the single pole a double and ask them to start stretching a second time.

Well, that's all for this go round.  Until next time!
